Turtle Inn - Francis Ford Coppola’s beach resort in Belize

Turtle Inn BeachThe Turtle Inn might be the most famous resort in all of Belize simply because it’s not only owned by, but it’s partially designed by Francis Ford Coppola, who’s best known as the director of the Godfather trilogy. And speaking of trilogies, Coppola also owns two other posh resorts in the region. His first resort was the Blancaneaux, which is located deep in the Belize jungle, and the famous auteur also owns the La Lancha Resort, which is not far from Tikal in Guatemala.

Location

The Turtle Inn is located about 2 miles from Placencia Village way out on the Placencia Peninsula, but it’s meant to be a self-contained paradise so its remoteness is one of its features rather than being a liability. In general, the beaches of Belize are not nearly as nice as many might expect before they arrive, but unsurprisingly the Turtle Inn is situated on one of the finest beaches in the entire country.

Cheap hotels in San Pedro - San Pedrano Hotel

San PedranoIt’s not too challenging to find out about the expensive and posh hotels and resorts on Ambergris Caye, but finding the cheap places isn’t as easy. Most of the budget places don’t have their own website, and even those that do are often hard to find in searches. So I like to highlight some low-price places from time to time to help my fellow cheapskate travelers.

I’ve not stayed at the San Pedrano Hotel, but I’d certainly give it a shot if I were headed to Ambergris Caye on a tight budget. This is a family run place with only 6 rooms and it’s located on Front Street in the heart of San Pedro, only 4 blocks from the Water Taxi pier. Their rates aren’t listed specifically on their Toucan Trail information page, but it does say that rooms go for between US$21 and US$40 per night, and other sources indicate at least in off-season rooms might be closer to the lower end of that range, or maybe even below it.

Corona del Mar Hotel and Apartments on San Pedro - Free rum punch!

CDM hotelMany of the most popular hotels on Ambergris Caye are the luxurious places that charge US$200 and more per night, but one place stands out since it also gets consistently high reviews and ratings from previous guests and yet it’s noticeably cheaper than the others.

The Corona del Mar Hotel & Apartments is right on the beach about half a mile south of San Pedro village, which is an ideal distance for a combination of convenience and tranquility. They have 12 hotel rooms and 4 apartment suites, and the highest price for any of them is well under US$200 per night even in peak season.

Cheap hotels in San Pedro – Martha’s Hotel

Marthas San PedroThe town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is home to hotels in all price ranges, and as these things often happen, the more expensive ones with their own modern websites tend to be easier to find out about than the cheap places that rely on walk-ups and word-of-mouth. Since we are cheapskates ourselves most of the time, we like to occasionally highlight Belize hotels that aren’t well known, but offer excellent value for budget travelers.

Martha’s Hotel is just such a place, and it’s one of the cheapest hotels in San Pedro. When considering places like this it’s important to keep your expectations in line with the price you’ll be paying. If there is a place in the world where you can find a posh air-conditioned suite on a beach for US$20, we’ve yet to find it. Most of the hotels in San Pedro and throughout Ambergris Caye cost many times the price of this place, and there are reasons why that is the case. But if you are a backpacker or budget traveler looking for a place to sleep while enjoying the beaches and such, this might be your place.

Birdwatching on Ambergris Caye - The People Perch at the Caribbean Villas

People perchBirdwatching, and the more intense version that is often called “birding”, are very popular throughout Belize. The jungle areas of the interior have far more to offer most people who are serious about birding, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience some of this nature-loving activity on Ambergris Caye.

About three-quarters of a mile south of the center of San Pedro village on the island you’ll find the Caribbean Villas resort right on the beach. This 12-room complex is surprisingly affordable for the area, and it has several features that make it truly unique. The most unusual thing and probably the greatest hook for the Caribbean Villas is that it’s set up partially as a bird sanctuary and they have their own 3-story “People Perch” built specifically for birders.

Cheap Caye Caulker hotels - Ignacio’s Beach Cabins

Ignacios cabinsSince most of the more expensive hotels in Belize have their own website and are easy to book online, but most of the cheaper ones aren’t, I occasionally like to spotlight some of the cheaper places to help budget travelers out a bit.

Ignacio’s Beach Cabins is an old school hotel with shockingly low prices, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right place for all my fellow cheapskates who visit Caye Caulker. There are many cheap hotels in Caye Caulker and in many cases if you spend a bit more you get many more important services. In other words, trying to book into the cheapest place isn’t always the best idea, but this place definitely deserves a look either way.

Ignacio’s has been in operation since 1978, and at that time it had five units, charged US$1.50 per night, and could not have been more basic. Now there are about 15 cabins, but things are still very basic. Each cabin-on-stilts has its own veranda that faces the Caribbean, as well as a bathroom, but hot water is evidently sporadic and maybe not drinkable either. If you want to go someplace to totally chill out with a nice view and a good book, this place could be ideal, but if you want something that’s even on the lowest end of the luxury scale this probably isn’t the place.

Backpackers Paradise - Really cheap beds in Northern Belize

Backpackers ParadiseOkay, I’ll admit that I’d never even heard of Sarteneja Village until just now, but after reading about the Backpackers Paradise cabanas and campsite I totally want to go. It’s fairly close to Corozal, which is a common stopping point for people coming or going to or from Chetumal, Mexico just to its north.

Backpackers Paradise says it’s a 2-minute walk out of the sleepy village of Sarteneja, which has about 3,000 residents who are mostly involved in fishing, wooden boat building, and fruit cultivation. For anyone looking to experience a truly authentic and relaxed Caribbean way of life, this place looks ideal. It appears to be very affordable as well, so even if it takes a bit of extra work to get there it could pay off with a cheap and wonderful stay for a few days or more.

The accommodations

As a cheapskate myself, the first thing that caught my eye was that camping costs a grand total of BZ$5 per night, which is US$2.50 for those unfamiliar with the permanent exchange rate. I’m not a camper usually so I think I’ll go for one of the double beds in the cabanas, which go for US$10 per night for the bed (rather than per person) so close friends and co-joined twins get an even better deal.

The Chicken Drop - San Pedro’s weirdest and most famous weekly event

Chicken dropThe Palace is the new casino on Ambergris Caye and it’s open six days per week. It’s closed on Wednesdays and that might be because the country’s most famous gambling opportunity takes place that day on the beach in front of the Pier Lounge bar at the Spindrift Hotel in the village of San Pedro.
