April in Belize

Belize hut 1April can be an ideal month to visit Belize as the wet season hasn’t officially begun, and yet crowds are starting to thin out. When Easter falls in April, as it will in 2009 and 2010, it can be fairly crowded during the traditional Spring Break week leading up to it. But when Easter falls in March, as it does in 2008, the month passes by with very few events of note.

April events in Belize

When Easter falls in April, the month is filled with special events surrounding that holiday and Good Friday. Check back for 2009 events as Easter falls on April 12 of that year. In 2008 you’ll have nothing to distract you from relaxing each morning before you start drinking some cheap and ice-cold Belikin beers all afternoon in the warm sun.

Weather

These stats are for Belize City, but most of the coastal areas people visit are close and have similar climates. The cities that are further inland usually have slightly hotter days and noticeably cooler nights, but generally are similar. So daytime temperatures can start feeling extreme during April in the inland areas, but nights tend to be pleasant throughout the country. The warm nights on the coast are usually offset by pleasant sea breezes, and the lower evening temperatures inland are mild enough that sleeping with no air conditioner is still okay for most people.

March in Belize

March in BelizeMarch in Belize marks the final full month of the high tourism season and also of the reliably perfect weather. The late Winter or early Spring Break crowds are probably more interested in the usual aquatic activities of scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, sea-kayaking and such, but there are a few interesting events that might play a small role in your holiday as well.

Tobacco Caye - Not your typical island paradise

by guest columnist Daniel Mode

Tobacco mainPerched comfortably atop the longest coral reef system in the Western Hemisphere, Belize’s tiny Tobacco Caye is a far cry from your overdeveloped Caribbean beach escape. With no hotels, no restaurants and no electricity, the charm of this island falls squarely upon its dramatically beautiful locale, and the network of family-owned guesthouses that accommodate weary travelers.

For decades, budget travelers have found a unique experience visiting this football field-sized island community, eating home cooked meals and snorkeling in the turquoise waters. Possibly the only place in the country where …

BootsnAll, which is the travel network that hosts this site, has put out their list of the Top 10 Destinations for Independent Travelers in 2008, and Belize is number two! Buenos Aires came in at number 10, and that’s the only other destination in the Western Hemisphere to make the list.

Here’s the description of Belize from the article:

Cayo Espanto - Belize’s most expensive resort

Cayo EspantoPeople who’ve visited other Caribbean resort destinations before are often surprised at how affordable resorts in Belize can be in comparison. You might be able to add the super-rich to that group because according to a 2006 CDNN article on the World’s 10 Most Expensive Resorts, the Cayo Espanto private island/resort only ranks 9th on that list (although prices for 2008 are $200 per night higher than in the article).

Belize real estate - list and browse ads for free

Belize HouseLet’s face it, Belize fans, this is just one of those kinds of places. Nearly everyone who comes to this country daydreams about owning, or at least renting, a house here. The gorgeous scenery, simple lifestyle, great weather, and friendly people make it very tempting for people even on modest budgets. So far the prices of real estate here haven’t caught up with prices in similar resort communities, so there is always interest from both daydreamers and investors.

So we are happy to announce that we’ve set up a section on Belizelogue for …

An all-inclusive Belize adventure vacation on a private island

Slickrock aerialOne of the most popular things to do when visiting Belize is head straight out to one of the famous offshore islands to spend a week diving, snorkeling, sea-kayaking, and fishing. It’s pretty easy to just show up and find outfitters on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker who will sell you individual activities, but for people interested in taking this sort of water-centric Belize vacation to the next level, Slickrock Adventures offers some all-inclusive packages that combine all of these things and many more, each endlessly at your disposal on …

February in Belize

February in BelizeFebruary in Belize is still the prime tourism season, especially for the resort islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, but crowds tend to be a bit lighter than during the busiest part of the year around News Years. There are a few events in the country that might be of interest to travelers, but for the most part this month is one that’s celebrated by visitors escaping the cold climates of North America and doing as little as possible.

Events

Fiesta de Carnival – This is Belize’s version of Carnival or Mardi Gras, and it’s celebrated all over the island starting a week before lent, which falls on February 6 in 2008, February 25 in 2009, and February 17 in 2010.

International Billfish Tournament in Belize City – This big fishing tournament offers cash prizes for marlin and sailfish anglers in early February.

Valentine Cycle Race – This annual cycling event starts in Belmopan and ends in Belize City on February 14 each year. What could be more romantic than a long-distance bike race?

The Chicken Drop - San Pedro’s weirdest and most famous weekly event

Chicken dropThe Palace is the new casino on Ambergris Caye and it’s open six days per week. It’s closed on Wednesdays and that might be because the country’s most famous gambling opportunity takes place that day on the beach in front of the Pier Lounge bar at the Spindrift Hotel in the village of San Pedro.

January in Belize

Belize JanuaryJanuary is prime visiting season in Belize, and strangely there aren’t many special events that help define the season. This is probably the best time of the year to visit Belize and there is plenty to do in this tiny Caribbean country as it is, so the fact that you won’t be distracted by strange local events really doesn’t matter much.

January events in Belize

New Year’s Day – There is a dodgy-sounding horse race in a small town called Burrell Boom Village, which is about 30 km northwest of Belize City. It’s well off the beaten path so you’d probably have to plan a part of your trip around being in this village in order to see the race, which is sure to be entertaining and also sure to be a good way to lose all your money if you got involved in the gambling side of things.

New Year’s Day (again) – The annual KREM bicycle race from the Orange Walk city center in Corozal to Belize City. KREM is a TV and radio station in Belize and they sponsor this 50-mile race every January 1 in several different classes.
